GMO Payment Gateway to Provide System for First Ever Mobile Phone Tax Payment
Tokyo – October 30, 2007 – GMO Internet Group remote credit card payment processing company, GMO Payment Gateway has been selected to handle data for light vehicle tax credit card payments made by mobile phone in Fujisawa city, Kanagawa prefecture from 2008.

Fujisawa city in Kanagawa prefecture began accepting credit card payments for light vehicle taxes over the Internet in 2006. In 2008 they will become the first government in the country to accept tax payments via mobile phone. This move makes it possible for residents to make light vehicle tax payments even when they are away from home.
GMO-PG is providing Fujisawa city with their credit card payment processing ASP service as a data handling service for light vehicle tax credit card payments made via mobile phone.
Background
When Fujisawa city became the first municipal government to trial online credit card payments (light vehicle taxes) in 2006, the results far exceeded their expectations. In 1997 they implemented the GMO-PG public sector credit card payment processing service for regular payments and both number of payments received and use rate were almost doubled the previous year. As a result, Fujisawa city decided to introduce mobile phone credit card payments beginning in 2008 to provide residents with an even more convenient credit card payment environment.
The ownership rate of mobile phones is now 88% (3/2007), it’s functions can be used to make purchases, reservations, applications and for a range of other purposes. The mobile phone has become an integral part of daily life. By making it possible for residents to use their mobile phones to pay taxes anywhere, anytime, governments can increase the rate of tax payments received by the due date.
