Onamae.com Launches Japanese Language Domain Registration Campaign to Coincide with Introduction of IE7 (Japanese) to Microsoft Automatic Updates

Tokyo – February 13, 2008 – GMO Internet official ICANN domain registrar, onamae.com announces the launch of the Japanese Language Domain Campaign to coincide with the upgrade of Microsoft Automatic Update that now includes the Japanese character domain compatible Internet Explorer®7 (Japanese). Between February 13 and March 26 we will be offering Japanese character domain registration for 1,980yen, less than half the regular price.
*ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers): American non-profit organization responsible for the global management of Internet domain names and IP addresses. It also holds the authority to designate official domain registration companies.
Use of the Japanese Character Domain Name
In Japan approximately 36% (*1) of the Internet population use IE6 and for this reason require a plug-in (*2) to handle Japanese character domains. As of today Japanese character domain compatible IE7 (Japanese) will be distributed with Microsoft Updates and Windows Updates.
The commencement of the IE7 automatic update is likely to result in many IE6 users upgrading to IE7. This means that almost all Internet users will be able to access Japanese character domains in their standard browser environment. We can now expect increasing interest in Japanese language domain names for web sites and promotional campaigns.

(1) Easy to Remember: Create a Lasting Impression
The advantage of using a Japanese character domain in Japan is that it easier for the user to remember than an alphabet URL and therefore creates a more lasting impression. The use of a company or service name as a domain exactly as it appears in commercials or on billboards helps create a stronger impression.

(2) User Enters Domain in Native Language: Reduce Typing Error Related Access Issues
Japanese character domains allow Japanese users to enter a URL in the characters they are familiar with and use every day. This reduces the chances of the user making mistakes when entering a URL. The result is improved accessibility and better ability to attract visitors to a site.
(3) Use in Conjunction with Alphabet Domain
Web site operators that already use an alphabetized version of their company name as a domain can now also direct users to their site through a Japanese language domain to increase access to the site.(*3)

Japanese Character Domain Campaign Outline
