GlobalSign Launches Digital Certificate for Distribution Business Messaging
Tokyo – August 1, 2008 -- GMO Hosting & Security consolidated subsidiary and digital certificate service provider, GlobalSign announces the launch today of a digital certificate compliant with distribution BMS (Business Message Standards), the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, Distribution System Standardization Project specifications. GMO Hosting & Security is a GMO Internet Group company.
The new GlobalSign products SSL Server Certificate for EDI and Client Certification for EDI are special distribution BMS digital certificates that meet the standards set out in the Distribution Industry Common Certificate Authority Certificate Policy.
Distribution BMS is now being actively introduced in the manufacturing industry as well as by major supermarkets and wholesalers. In future it is also expected to be widely used by department stores and drug store chains.
Distribution BMS replaces the former closed EDI*1 with an open Internet environment. In this new environment digital certificates have become essential to transaction security. It is imperative that businesses can carry out trusted transactions as distribution BMS becomes more widely used.
Experienced certificate authority GlobalSign will offer the distribution BMS products, SSL Server Certificate for EDI and Client Certificate for EDI. The two digital certificates can be used by businesses of all sizes. Customers can select one to three year validity and add optional features (wild cards, Intranet, validity customization).
*1 EDI (Electronic Data Interchange) is a system used for the interchange between businesses of data such as orders, quotations, and other commercial transactions.
Distribution Business Message Standards (Distribution BMS)
Distribution Business Message Standards are EDI standard specifications that have been formulated to standardize messaging (digital transactions), communication protocols, and security throughout the distribution industry. The new standards resolve many of the issues faced by users of existing EDI through;
1. Use of high speed, low cost Internet
2. Industry wide standardization of data items enabling all transactions between distribution companies to be carried out using common EDI messaging.
3. The replacement of invoicing and other paperwork with EDI for reduced administration and related costs.
Distribution BMS offers many merits including easy implementation and improved productivity.
Distribution BMS uses the Internet to communicate through protocols including ebMS*2, AS2*3, and JX*4, so security measures that were not previously required have now become essential. The usage of digital certificates is now imperative for access regulation, encryption, authentication, and prevention of tampering. Standards have also been developed for digital certificates and the Distribution Systems Research Institute manages compliance.
*2 ebMS: Part of the ebXML next generation EDI international standard communication protocol jointly developed by CEFACT and OASIS. Defines XML message delivery and data packages.
*3 AS2: International standard for Internet EDI established by IETF. Implementation has begun primarily in the United States.
*4 JX Protocol: Standards for Japan developed due to difficulties using ebMS in banks to migrate from EOS.
