Onamae.com Launches Free Secondary DNS Service
Tokyo – September 4, 2008 – GMO Internet official ICANN*1 domain registrar, Onamae.com announces the launch today of the new free Secondary DNS (DNS Zone Forwarding)*2 service.
The new offering broadens the Onamae.com DNS service line-up which now includes, Secondary DNS, DNS Record Configuration and Dynamic DNS.
*1 ICANN (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers): American non-profit organization responsible for the global management of Internet domain names and IP addresses. It also holds the authority to designate official domain registration companies.
*2 DNS (Domain Name System): The system that handles domain names and IP addresses. When a user accesses a web site, their local name server queries DNS servers to determine the IP address of the domain name. DNS returns the IP address allowing the user to view the web server at that address.
Free Secondary DNS (DNS Zone Forwarding)
The new Secondary DNS (DNS Zone Forwarding) service allows the customer's domain information (zone information) to be shared between their DNS server (primary DNS server*3) and the Onamae.com DNS server (secondary DNS server).
Information is periodically sent from the primary DNS server to the secondary DNS server synchronizing data and enabling DNS server load sharing. In addition it allows the domain to continue operating even when the primary DNS server is down. This service is provided free to Onamae.com domain customers.
*3: A minimum of two regular DNS servers is required to operate a domain. The main server is called the primary DNS server and sub servers are called secondary DNS servers.
Secondary DNS is ideal for these customers:
● Customers operating a domain on a single DNS server
It is advisable to operate on at least two DNS servers to provide protection against system trouble and other issues. Many of our customers operate their own servers at home or at work and require a secondary DNS server.
● Customers who would like to run a second DNS server but find the cost prohibitive
Secondary DNS (DNS Zone Forwarding) provides a secondary DNS server free of charge.
Other DNS Services
DNS Record Configuration (Free)
DNS Record Configuration is a service that allows customers to freely configure DNS records, necessary when running a domain name on a web or mail server. This service is provided free to Onamae.com domain customers.
DNS Record Configuration is ideal for these customers:
●Businesses that own and operate their own web servers and mail servers but do not have a DNS server
The service allows customers to use one domain name to run multiple content items and as a mail address domain. Ideal for anyone who wants to run Gmail/Google Apps (TM), Hotmail/Windows Live (TM), a blog or a shopping cart on their domain.

A(Address) | Used to map hostnames *4 to an IP address*5. |
CNAME | Defines an alias host name for an existing host. Used to forward a specific host name to an alternative domain. |
MX | Defines a mail exchange server host name. |
NS | Defines the server name of the name server that manages zone information. |
TXT | Used to map text information to host names. Describes domain verification information (SPF Records) etc. |
*4 Host name: Name of the server (eg. hostname.domainname.com)
*5 IP address: Address of the server (eg. 210:172:133:15)
Dynamic DNS
The Dynamic DNS (DDNS) service allows the customer to create a hostname that points to a dynamic IP address. It also provides an update mechanism that ensures the hostname works when the IP address changes.
When a customer builds a server they can use Dynamic DNS to publish content on the Internet using the regular dynamic IP address allocated by ADSL, fiber optic、and other Internet service providers without the outlay of acquiring a fixed IP address. The service also provides client software for IP maintenance and updates.
Dynamic DNS is ideal for these customers:
● Anyone who wants to publish content on the Internet using a home server or their home PC as a web server.
・Use a web camera to check on a pet at home or for home security from outside.
・Access a home server externally to gain access to or transfer music and video files.
