GMO Payment Gateway Launches Payment Processing Service for Supermarkets
Tokyo – April 7, 2009 – GMO Internet Group non-face-to-face payment processing company, GMO Payment Gateway announces the launch of a payment processing service for online supermarkets.
At a time of conservative consumer spending, people are spending more time at home and there is increasing demand for online supermarkets. The new GMO-PG service is aimed at bricks and mortar supermarkets seeking to expand sales channels.
Also, GMO PG today entered an agreement with NEO BEAT K.K. under which the two companies will jointly sell NEO BEAT online supermarket systems including the GMO-PG payment processing service.
Background and Summary
An online supermarket receives orders over the Internet and delivers products from store to customer. The recent economic downturn has impacted consumption and affected consumer habits. People are spending more time at home and eating more often at home. As a result demand is strong for online services that offer almost the same experience as a physical supermarket including same-day delivery of fresh produce and daily goods. Major supermarket chains are rapidly expanding into online sales and the market is growing fast.
However, there several aspects of the online supermarket business that have presented obstacles to the implementation of payment processing services. These include the handling of perishables, the fluid nature of stock levels that can result in orders being placed for goods out of stock, and cancellations arising from returns and undeliverable orders.
GMO-PG has built a system that caters to these needs and will offer the services to companies launching new online supermarket businesses.
At the same time, in partnership with online supermarket systems and management experts, NEO BEAT we are offering an online supermarket system that features the following essential services in addition to GMO-PG payment processing services.
●Delivery notification (using position information) service: Position information system tracking service that automatically sends a notification to the customer’s mobile phone 10 minutes before delivery to reduce occurrences of undeliverable orders.
●Product analysis system (map information): Delivery time and costs are estimated, sales and customer acquisitions are forecast based on household data in the store locality.
●Compatible with core systems: Works in conjunction with POS and product management systems already in use.
GMO-PG and NEO BEAT services for companies seeking to establish online operations are backed by systems construction and provision experience gained developing an online supermarket system for major supermarket chain Izumiya Co. Ltd.

3. Cancellation handling: System allows for order cancellation even after payment is processed.
4. Store card handling: GMO-PG has linked to over 40 credit card companies. In addition to the five major card brands (*1), store cards can also be used.
*1:VISA, MasterCard, JCB, American Express, Diners Club
Outlook
In 2009 the online supermarket market is forecast to grow 25% to 28.4 billion yen. (*2) Consumers who have developed online supermarket shopping habits during the economic downturn are likely to continue using online services regardless of future economic conditions. At the same time, it is expected that the aging population among other factors will cause a rise in demand for home delivery services. GMO-PG and NEO BEAT aim to provide online supermarket systems to ten companies by the end of the current fiscal year.
