GMO Payment Gateway Develops Japan's First OpenID Credit Card Payment Processing Service
Tokyo – October 7, 2009 -- GMO Internet Group non-face-to-face credit card payment processing company, GMO Payment Gateway (TSE: 3769) has developed Japan’s first OpenID credit card payment service that enables credit card details and other information to be associated with a user ID. Through this service, we aim to provide users with a more convenient online shopping experience enabling them to smoothly complete ecommerce transactions at multiple sites from login to payment using a single ID. The service is expected to launch by the end of the year.
Background and Summary
OpenID, the identity that can be used across multiple ecommerce web sites and services, is expanding worldwide and being picked up by a growing number of major companies in Japan. It is estimated that 1.4 billion OpenIDs will have been issued by the end of 2009. However, while an OpenID will allow the user to access different ecommerce sites with one ID, there are currently no services that allow OpenID web sites common usage of customer credit card details and other information required when making a purchase. The user still has to enter this information each time they make a purchase, significantly slowing the process.
GMO Payment Gateway has developed an OpenID payment processing service that allows users to log in to multiple ecommerce sites with a single ID and save time entering payment details. This is the first service of its kind in Japan.
OpenID users can register credit details and other information at the time they acquire an ID. This allows them to make purchases at any OpenID ecommerce site without having to enter payment details. For ecommerce businesses the user hassle of entering credit card information represents a major loss of opportunity - this service significantly reduces that loss. In addition, because the business does not store customer credit card information, there is no need to struggle with measures for protecting against unauthorized access or information leakage.
GMO Payment Gateway is now testing the OpenID payment processing service with Open Source EC-CUBE for ecommerce site construction (*3). We are evaluating the system in conjunction with relevant organizations, and we expect to launch the service before the end of the year.
Epsilon, Inc, a consolidated subsidiary of GMO Payment Gateway, provides payment processing services for the GMO Internet Group ID, “GMO Toku Toku ID”(*4). GMO Payment Gateway and Epsilon intend to provide both the Open ID payment processing service and the GMO Internet Group ID payment processing service.
