GMO Registry Announces Application for DotShop New gTLD
Tokyo – November 2, 2009 – GMO Internet Group company, GMO Registry last Wednesday announced its intention to apply for DotShop as a new generic top level domain (gTLD). Plans for the new ecommerce domain were unveiled during a reception hosted by the company at ICANN 36 in Seoul. GMO Registry and the entire GMO Internet Group shared its vision for DotShop and demonstrated its commitment to obtaining the new gTLD.
About DotShop
We believe there is worldwide demand for a domain that represents the ecommerce industry. Globally the ecommerce market continues to experience dramatic growth. However, as yet there is no domain that identifies a website as an ecommerce site. With the vast number of websites on the Internet today, DotShop offers ecommerce businesses a distinct advantage by making their URL instantly recognizable as an ecommerce address. In an era where shopping online has become a part of every day life, we believe the Internet name space needs a simple, self-explanatory domain for the ecommerce industry.
As a comprehensive ecommerce solutions provider, the GMO Internet Group can offer competitively priced DotShop ecommerce packages including shopping cart, SSL security and payment gateway solutions.
About the New gTLD Program
There are currently 21 gTLDs (.com, .net etc.) in use. As the Internet expands, there have been increasing calls for ICANN, the governing body of the Internet, to introduce new gTLDs. In June 2008, the ICANN Board of Directors approved a policy process for the introduction of new domains and is now working toward launching a new gTLD application program. The program will open up applications for corporate, geographic, and open top-level domains. GMO Registry intends to apply for a dot shop domain in the first application round.
Excerpt from the Speech given by Mark Kumagai, CEO, GMO Registry & GMO Internet Group
GMO Internet Group has a proven track record, extensive domain industry expertise and our own technology. We operate shopping cart, payment gateway, SSL security, and marketing solutions – all the tools required by ecommerce. All of these services were developed in-house.
We can offer an ecommerce ready product at a competitive price.
The new TLD is an opportunity to develop and expand the ecommerce industry and provide new business opportunities for registrars. We believe this initiative will change the Internet.
This is why GMO Registry and the entire GMO Internet Group are committed to applying for the dot shop domain. We will be in Nairobi next year to take part in the ICANN meeting and continue to introduce the products we can offer.
Together with other new gTLD applicants we can lead new innovation, and development of the Internet. We can change the Internet and change people’s lives.
