GMO Internet Group Companies Launch High Availability Database Platform Design Service for Ecommerce Sites Looking to Outsource Development
Tokyo – March 15, 2010 – GMO Internet Group companies, GMO System Consulting and GMO Hosting & Security announce the launch today of High Availability (HA)DB Platform Design Service, a comprehensive package solution that includes design and operation of a database server on an HA cluster system and DRDB*1 support. The new service is part of the GMO-SC outsourced development project.
High Availability (HA) Database Platform Design Service
The new solution includes Core Managed Service by GMO-HS hosting brand iSLE and an HA cluster system built by GMO-SC using DRBD in addition to a regular web server. Actual operation is handled by iSLE and DRDB support provided by ThirdWave.
In all stages of the process from system development and maintenance to operation GMO-SC acts as your first point of contact.
1. Order made systems built to maintain high availability and continuous data protection
Because the database runs on an HA cluster system, it is ideal for ecommerce sites required to handle personal information and credit card details, service sites that collect fees from their members, content sales websites, and other businesses that demand high availability and continuous data protection. GMO-SC can design a system custom made to meet each of our customers’ needs.
2. Simple structure and low cost, stable operation
The database server consists of two servers networked into an HA cluster, unlike many existing cluster formations that employ shared disk file systems for data replication, our service offers a cluster system that uses DRDB to mirror data. Because we offer a simpler structure that doesn’t require a shared disk, downtime is minimized and customers can expect both more stable operation and lower implementation costs. In addition DRBD and other software is Open Source so license fees and software maintenance costs are minimized and our customers are likely to see significant savings on platform software costs.
3. HA cluster system pre-tested for reduced design costs
When constructing an HA cluster system database server, there are often unexpected software issues such as compatibility with hardware. It is generally necessary to dedicate time and money to testing system designs. We will implement a pre-tested HA cluster system database server so that no extra costs are incurred for the testing of hardware, software, OS, middleware and database management system (DBMS) combinations. Our service uses the MySQL DBMS.
4. Reduced Operational Burden
GMO-HS brand iSLE offers HA cluster system operational surveillance 24 hours-a-day 365 days-a-year, replacement of enclosures in case of hardware damage, and all required operational tasks as part of the service package. Our customers are free to concentrate on managing their websites without having to worry about system management.

*1 DRBD is an automated real-time data mirroring and storage system that operates via the Internet. DRBD is used with the cooperation of ThirdWare Inc, the only accredited partner in Japan of LINBIT, the Austrian company who developed DRBD.
*2 HA Cluster System is a redundant system consisting of multiple servers. The system is built to ensure that down time is minimized in the event of system trouble.
