GlobalSign Launches Digital ID Certificate to Sign and Encrypt US FDA Applications Submitted Electronically
Tokyo – March 25, 2010 -- GMO Hosting & Security group member and digital certification services provider, GlobalSign K.K. today launched Digital ID Certificate, a client certificate (*1) that can be used submit electronic applications to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Background to the Launch of Digital ID (S/MIME) Certificate
The FDA is the US government agency that regulates pharmaceutical drugs, medical devices, food products, and cosmetics. It is responsible for evaluating and ensuring the safety and efficacy of the ingredients and raw materials products in these categories contain. All companies, including foreign corporations, that distribute FDA-regulated products in the United States are obligated to undergo product safety evaluations, obtain approval from and submit reports to the agency. Applications to the FDA may be submitted and processed electronically via the FDA Electronic Submissions Gateway (ESG). These submissions must be encrypted and signed using a client certificate. More and more Japanese companies require client certificates that can be used to submit applications to via the FDA ESG.
In response to this rising demand, GlobalSign in Japan has launched the Digital ID (S/MIME) Certificate, a client certificate solution for enterprise that can be used to issue as few as one certificate.
About Digital ID (S/MIME) Certificates
Digital ID (S/MIME) Certificates can be used to sign and encrypt applications submitted via the FDA ESG. The new client certificate service makes it possible to acquire a Digital ID certificate issued by a certificate authority that is valid for three years as recommended by the FDA. Until now, Japanese companies have had to apply for certificates in English from a US certificate authority. However the Digital ID (S/MIME) Certificate service makes it possible for the entire process from application to payment, vetting and technical support to be carried out from within Japan. Digitally signing email provides authentication of authorship, alerts the receiver as to whether or not changes have been made to the email or any attached documents since signing, and encrypts mail content. As a result the FDA knows they are receiving legitimate applications and confidentiality of communications with the applicant is ensured.
With the rise of email fraud, phishing attacks and other cyber crime, client certificates have become an essential form of protection for companies of all sizes. GlobalSign’s Digital ID (S/MIME) certificate is of course available to customers for uses other than the FDA ESG application process.
