paperboy&co. Launches One-stop eBook Self-Publishing Service, Puboo
Tokyo – June 22, 2010 – BookLog, the online virtual bookshelf and book review community by GMO Internet Group company, paperboy&co. today launches Puboo, a new service that enables individuals to self- publish their own ebooks.
BookLog is an online book review community featuring a bookshelf interface that allows users to display books, CDs, DVDs and other items. One of the biggest communities of its kind in Japan, its 280 thousand users have registered over 17 million items. (6/2010)
This year we are seeing the ebook redefined as a succession of new multimedia devices like the iPad coming onto the market, and growing development of online platforms for viewing magazines and books. The industry is expected to expand rapidly with the groundswell of interest in self-publishing. BookLog is launching Puboo to provide authors with a simple low-cost way to publish their work bypassing traditional publishing companies.
One-Stop Online eBook Solution: Create, Publish and Sell
The entire process from creating an ebook to publishing and selling it, is carried out on the Puboo website. Everything can be done from the Puboo administration screen so no additional software is required. The service simplifies tasks like setting up online sales and payment processing, and its easy to use interface makes it possible for anyone to publish an ebook.
Puboo is free, simply create an account to start using the service. (However, a commission is charged on book sales). BookLog users can log in to Puboo using their existing BookLog account.
Create
Puboo allows users to create as many ebooks as they like. Images and text decoration can be added from the editing screen and completed pages can be viewed using the preview tool.
Publish
After a book is created the next step is to publish it. Published books can be viewed on the Puboo website. It is also possible to publish pages from incomplete works or to publish chapters individually in a serial format.
Sell
When publishing, the author can select whether to sell their book or make it available for free. Prices can be set anywhere between 100 yen to 3000 yen. A 30% commission is deducted from the sale of each book and the author receives 70% of proceeds. The author may also opt to make certain pages available free for “browsing”.
Convert to PDF, EPUB for Viewing on iPad, Kindle etc.
Books created using Puboo can be automatically converted to ebook formats EPUB and PDF for viewing on an iPad, Kindle or other ereader or on a smartphone such as the iPhone.
Going Forward: A One-Stop Service from Creation through to Distribution and Marketing
Beginning this summer, BookLog users will be able to add Puboo-created ebooks to their bookshelves as well as post reviews and view evaluations by other users. This provides exposure to a community of over 280,000 readers and provides a forum for readers to discuss their work. A number of other functions will also be enhanced including the ability to search for ebooks together with regular books, and a new tool that allows multiple authors to contribute to a single creation. Going forward paperboy&co. plans to introduce a matching service for copywriters, illustrators, proofreaders, and publicity officers. paperboy&co. aims to provide an all-inclusive, easy to use ebook service for individuals that covers planning an ebook right through to sales.
